Restricted Rail Cars – Over Age

Per AAR Field Manual Rule 88, railcars built on or after July 1, 1974 are limited to 50 years of service and railcars built prior to that date were limited to 40 years or service. However per 49 CFR 215.203, railcars that are more than 50 years to the end of the month of the date of construction are restricted from operation on the railroad. This means that the car must arrive at the scrapping facility on or before this date. For example, if the car was built 10/01/1974, then the car must arrive at the scrapping facility by 10/31/2024. If the car has not reached the scrapping facility by this date, the car movement requires a one-time movement (OTM) approval from the FRA Motive Power and Equipment group.
