Future Phase-Out Date for Class 3 Flammable Liquids

04/30/2026

Tip of the Month - 2024

This is a reminder that effective May 1, 2029, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) will prohibit the use of legacy DOT-111 and enhanced CPC-1232 (DOT-111) tank cars for the transportation of all Class 3 flammable liquids, which will include Packing Group II and III, in the United States, including residue shipments.

This will add Class 3 PG II and III flammable liquids to the current requirements for unrefined petroleum products, ethanol, and PG I. These tank cars must not be offered for transportation or be in transportation with these materials on or after May 1, 2029.

Tank car owners should continue progressing efforts to replace or retrofit legacy fleets to ensure compliance ahead of the deadline and avoid potential service disruptions.
